School psychologists often break confidentiality if confronted with risky adolescent behavior. Members of the National Association of School Psychologists ( N = 78) responded to a survey containing a vignette describing an adolescent engaging in risky behaviors and rated the degree to which it is ethical to break confidentiality for behaviors of varying frequency, intensity, and duration. Respondents generally found it ethical to break confidentiality when risky adolescent behaviors became more dangerous or potentially harmful, although there was considerable variability between (...) respondents. Significant gender effects were found between male and female respondents for alcohol use, and a significant Form Type (i.e., male or female vignette) Frequency/Duration interaction was observed for antisocial behaviors. School psychologists could benefit from further training in ethical decision making because these ethical dilemmas are not always clear-cut. (shrink)

In a remarkable experiment lasting over a decade, a group of 88 independent campuses, ranging from comprehensive universities to intimate colleges, have demonstrated the value of an emerging educational agenda focused on infusing the exploration of meaning and purpose into undergraduate life. These programs have shown that college can provide emerging adults with an understanding of themselves and today’s insecure and highly competitive world that enhances their ability to develop the resilience to create meaningful lives. By focusing on the exploration (...) of vocation, including its theological meanings, these efforts produced remarkable outcomes in enhanced student engagement in learning and more effective entry into adult life. Discernment of vocation provided, for many students, a synthetic and compelling focus for intellectual and practical exploration. Sustained by articulate reflection and grounded in communities of learning that included faculty as well as students, undergraduate life took on new significance and urgency. Examining the experiences of students and faculty, this book reveals the concrete importance of this educational agenda for individual lives and particular campuses. By connecting the several dimensions of undergraduate experience through reflection on purpose, these programs expanded the bandwidth of academic learning to strengthen the broad aims of liberal education. Within the larger, troubled environment of contemporary higher education these pioneering efforts hold promise for a significant rethinking of the undergraduate experience to better serve students and society. Word learning depends critically on the use of linguistic context to constrain the likely meanings of words. However, the mechanisms by which children infer word meaning from linguistic context are still poorly understood. In this study, we asked whether adults (n = 58) and 2‐ to 6‐year‐old children (n = 180) use discourse coherence relations (i.e., the meaningful relationships between elements within a discourse) to constrain their interpretation of novel words. Specifically, we showed participants videos of novel animals exchanging objects. (...) These videos were accompanied by a linguistic description of the events in which we manipulated a single word within a sentence (and vs. because) in order to alter the causal and temporal relations between the events in the discourse (e.g., “One animal handed the baby to the other animal [and/because] the baby started crying in the talfa's arms”). We then asked participants which animal (the giver or the receiver) was the referent of the novel word. Across two experiments, we found evidence that young children used the causal and temporal relations in each discourse to constrain their interpretations of novel words. (shrink)

Chapter 3 focuses on the pedagogical implications of the PTEV’s language of “calling.” In contrast to customary language describing students as individually “driven,” the metaphor of calling stresses responsiveness to context and active engagement with community. Such learning focuses on the cultivation of purpose and self-fulfillment as inseparable from the needs of the larger society. The chapter examines PTEV initiatives at Butler University and Macalester College, campuses marked by a secular approach to education. In these cases, themes of personal exploration, (...) social service, and inter-religious dialogue proved attractive ways to engage students with questions of purpose and practical wisdom. Each campus evolved distinctive emphases, with Butler using core curriculum and an inter-religious center, while Macalester linked vocational exploration to global and local service learning and communal living. These experiments brought secular and religiously inflected approaches to liberal learning into mutually fruitful dialogue. (shrink)

Chapter 1 opens with the example of a PTEV course at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California, which combines exploration of vocation, reflective practice, and participation in a learning community. This course combines the study of classic texts with new questions about what can be learned about how to live in the present from understanding how individuals in the past achieved successful lives through searching for purpose and meaning. By reanimating classic aspects of liberal education in this way, PTEV (...) programs like Santa Clara’s were able to successfully address in new ways challenges to educating the “whole student” that derive from the particular stresses affecting this generation of undergraduates, on the one hand, and the current misalignment among the components of college life, on the other. Chapter 4 further explores the metaphor of calling, this time by considering how Earlham College and Santa Clara University were able to draw on their strong religious traditions to develop practices of reflection that helped students become more active, engaged, and disciplined learners. Earlham College was able to reinvigorate its Quaker heritage, with its unique melding of inner reflection and social action and testimony by infusing these themes broadly in curricular and co-curricular innovation. Santa Clara drew up its Jesuit tradition (...) to extend the university’s already existing emphasis upon themes of Catholic Social Teaching into new programs of residential life and study-service trips abroad to complement a PTEV-inspired emphasis upon vocational themes in the core curriculum. Catholic health care institutions in the United States and Canada face internal and external challenges to their continued existence. Confronted by these external and internal challenges, Catholic hospitals in the United States and Canada have been pressed to identify what is distinctive about the Catholic contribution to health care and to consider whether existing institutional structures and partnerships foster what is distinctive. The author looks at the essays in this volume by Dennis Brodeur, Clarke E. Cochran, and Christopher J. Kauffman, (...) and suggests that there is little agreement, even among Catholics, on such fundamental issues. The aim of this article is to highlight three important and often overlooked ideas raised by the authors, to relate them to the Canadian context by means of a story, and to pose questions for further discussion. Modern American medicine has wedded scientific advance to a small business model of the individual practitioner, defining professionalism as technical understanding. If the profession is to survive, it must draw on older ideals of the learned professions as acting on behalf of the community, and reinvigorate a civic understanding of professional life.

Chapter 7 returns to the opening themes of the book, probing the meaning of the “theological exploration of vocation” for humanistic educational practice. Gordon College’s efforts to educate students in both “Jerusalem” and “Athens” form an illustrative example. The chapter asks how we might understand the PTEV campuses’ ability to use the intellectual resources of Christian theology to self-reflexively draw upon religious symbols in ways that enabled students to probe more deeply and authentically their own questions of meaning and purpose. In answer, the chapter develops an account of how the PTEV’s emphasis upon religion as a mode of practical, yet critical engagement with the world renewed themes of humanistic understanding to support an integrated undergraduate experience that fostered liberal learning that included religious, interreligious, and secular points of view. Chapter 5 presents three very different examples one of the PTEV’s key strengths: the ability to foster communities of learning around vocational themes. The largely first-generation students at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas, were drawn into deeper engagement with their own quest for purpose and a meaningful future by entering into service among communities of recent immigrants, making personal connections while learning to understand these experiences within a larger historical and religious perspective. At Marquette University (...) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the PTEV was able to creatively adapt the Jesuit tradition of self-examination and awareness to form learning communities among faculty and staff that deepened their participants’ commitment to their common educational mission. This trajectory of revitalizing tradition to enhance educational mission converged with the parallel PTEV developments at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, that drew on Protestant traditions to develop a learning community among new and continuing faculty and staff that was focused on their common calling as educators. Three key elements of the Lilly Endowment’s Program on the Theological Exploration of Vocation is examined in this context: the theme of vocation and its integration of curricular and co-curricular learning to address the “whole student,” practices of reflection drawn from different religious traditions and their successful adaptation by the vocation programs, and the educative (...) power of learning communities comprising students, faculty, and staff. _Examining inequality through the lenses of moral traditions_ Rising inequality has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years from scholars and politicians, but the moral dimensions of inequality tend to be ignored. Is inequality morally acceptable? Is it morally permissible to allow practices and systems that contribute to inequality? Is there an ethical obligation to try to alleviate inequality, and if so, who is obligated to take that action? This book addresses these and similar questions not through a (...) single lens of morality but through a comparative study of ethical traditions, both secular and religious, Western and non-Western. The moral and political traditions considered are: liberalism, Marxism, natural law, feminism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and Confucianism. The types of inequality examined include property, natural resources, products, wealth, income, jobs, and taxation. The editors open the book with an introduction providing information on contemporary dimensions of the problem of economic inequality, and the book concludes with a summary of the perspectives represented. _Economic Inequality and Morality_ is unusual in that it addresses similarities and differences on the questions of inequality within and across moral traditions. Authors of the individual studies answer a common set of topic-related questions, giving the reader a broad perspective on how a broad range of traditions view and respond to inequality. (shrink)

The book’s argumentative arc ends with the claim that humanistic liberal education as practiced in the PTEV provides an example of how to build common ground for dialogue and enrichment among religious and secular approaches in higher education toward the end of developing a more effective approach to educating students for the 21st century. The evidence presented by the vocation programs examined in the book supports the conclusion that these (...) experiments provide American higher education with intellectual and cultural resources, examples of organizational innovation, and pedagogical practices that, taken together, constitute an alternative to the current situation that for too many students breeds either acquiescence in drift or a too narrow drive for achievement. The Conclusion ends by sketching reasons to think that a realignment of undergraduate education around the quest for purpose can make it possible for today’s students to break out of this dispiriting culture of acquiescence toward growth in academic learning, social development, and the formation of identities sustained by purpose. Chapter 2 explores the PTEV’s response to the contemporary misalignment of higher education through the development of a metaphor, drawn from recent research on cognition, of learning as apprenticeship. The chapter divides undergraduate experience into three “apprenticeships.” The first, or academic apprenticeship describes the formal educational program of courses of study, organized by the faculty. The second, or social apprenticeship refers to the co-curricular programs of clubs, organizations, and activities by which, universities and colleges seek to promote the personal and (...) social development of students. The third apprenticeship concerns the institutions’ efforts to provide students with opportunity to discover and develop a larger direction and purpose for themselves during their collegiate experience and beyond graduation. One such “third apprenticeship” experience, the Senior Keystone for the Business major at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is analyzed for its ability to integrate academic learning with career preparation around the vocation theme that the college’s PTEV program has infused widely in curricular and co-curricular areas of campus life.
